Spotify just made a huge announcement that it will be expanding its services to over 80 countries including Nigeria. They will also be adding new languages to the platform that include Swahili and Hindi.
Spotify is one of the largest audio streaming platforms in the world. One will wonder why they haven’t made their services available in Nigeria for a very long time. In Nigeria platforms like YouTube music and Audiomack are currently the most widely used audio streaming platforms things might change.
Spotify is a large global streaming platform and it is currently available in over half of the world. I feel Spotify should have been available in Nigeria for a while now. This is because Nigeria is the biggest African country in terms of music. The level of talent when it comes to music is unmatched by any other African country. Artists like Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy combined generate close to 150 million streams monthly. This is without the service available in their native country.
Nigerians love music because it is a part of our culture and with the coming of Spotify I feel more underground artists will get the exposure they deserve. They broke the news of their expansion at an event that was held on the 22nd of February. At the event, they also announced how they want to improve both artist and user experience on their platform.
What Will Nigerians Benefit from the Spotify Expansion
Until now I couldn’t stream music on Spotify without using a VPN. That alone made me switch to using Audiomack as my streaming platform. The process of streaming music on Spotify was a bit stressful but there are a lot of Nigerians that use the platform.
With the app launching in Nigeria, it means we will be able to sign up for free and use their various paid plans without using VPN. They come in various packages and it varies from county to country.
