After all, they had won the 1974 FIFA World Cup, for this reason, there was a huge chance that they could repeat the feat 4 years later. However, things didn’t work as expected for the West Germans. They barely qualified into the 2nd round after finishing in 2nd place of their group. At 1xBet you can place your sports bets on the group stages of different competitions too.
During this 2nd round, Austria was going to play against the West Germans. The Austrians had enjoyed a great performance during their 1st round. It is worth remembering that back then, the 2nd round of the FIFA World Cup was another group stage. And here the Austrians really suffered after being defeated by the Netherlands and Italy, this meant that they arrived at the match against West Germany with no chances of advancing further.
A spectacular match
Austria and West Germany finally encountered each other on the 21st of June 1978 in the city of Córdoba, Argentina. Currently you can place any football bet – 1xbet.ug/line/Football/ features matches from Argentinian football too.
The Austrians call this match the “Miracle of Córdoba”, while the Germans call it the “Disgrace of Córdoba” instead. The reason for those varying names is quite obvious. The Austrians defeated the West Germans 3-2, and the goals were scored by:
- Hans Krankl;
- Karl-Heinz Rummenigge;
- Bernd Hölzenbein;
- and also, there was an own goal from Berti Vogts.
The 1xBet website is a place where you can place any football bet on great matches between those 2 teams too.
A painful elimination for West Germany
The match was really tough. In fact, by the 86th minute, things were still 2-2, and Austria, even having no chances to advance further in the tournament, was still playing ferociously. With this draw, the Germans still had a chance to qualify for the 3rd place match. However, Hans Krankl put things 3-2 in Austria’s favor in the 87th minute. This meant that Germany would be eliminated from the tournament. This was painful for the West Germans not just because of the defeat, but also because it was the first time in 47 years that Austria defeated any German national team.
