The possibility that you’ve heard of a sim only is, of course, quite high. As costs continue to rise and we become increasingly aware of the need to save. More and more people are opting for a sim only. So if you also have the idea to keep your old smartphone a bit longer, then read this article and find out everything you need to know about a sim-only subscription. Not only the advantages and disadvantages but also what exactly it is and what you should pay attention to when buying such a subscription.
What is a sim only?
The name actually says it all. When you take out a sim-only subscription, you only (only) get a sim (card). You still have to buy the phone with it, or just use your current phone. With a sim only subscription, you only pay for the minutes, text messages and data you use each month. These bundles are refreshed monthly. An example makes it a lot clearer. When you buy a subscription with 200 call minutes, 100 text messages and 2 GB mobile Internet, you have to make do with these numbers every month. Do you use more than your bundles allow? Then you have to pay extra and those who use less will not get a refund. So, you pay the same monthly amount whether you use 40 minutes or the full bundle (of 200). By the way, there are also unlimited sim only subscriptions. This means that you are not bound to a maximum number of minutes, SMS and/or data.
The different contract duration
You can always choose from different durations with sim only. Depending on the provider, you can choose a subscription for 1, 12 or 24 months. With the first variant, your contract is extended monthly, so you are not tied to anything. An annual subscription is concluded for a period of 12 months, after which the contract is converted into an open-ended subscription. Then your subscription (with most providers) can be terminated monthly. The same conditions apply to 2-year subscriptions (24 months). If you have a 1-year or 2-year subscription and want to cancel early, you must consider a surrender fee. The provider then makes a proposal for the remaining costs. Not quite sure what kind of subscription to take out? Then it is wise to first take out a monthly cancellation package. You can then see how much you call, text and Internet each month – without being tied down to anything. Once you have a clear picture of your usage, you can switch to a 1 or 2-year subscription. Those are almost always cheaper.
Compare different providers
When you make the choice to go for a sim only subscription, it is always advisable to compare different providers online first. This is because comparing your sim only abonnement can save you a lot of money. Prices can differ by several euros per month per provider. Especially nowadays, you can very easily compare different providers online in one overview.
