Decentralized exchanges such as Uniswap for example, see hundreds of millions of dollars worth of transactions every day. Instead of creating a customer database, it tends to favor pseudonymity by allowing users to transact with one another anonymously and directly.
Uniswap is a decentralized financial protocol for trading cryptocurrencies and tokens. UNI is Uniswap’s native token. The difference between a coin and a token is that a coin, such as bitcoin, has its own network, whereas a token, such as Ethereum’s ERC-20 tokens, operates on top of other networks. A global community of UNI token holders and delegates manages the Uniswap protocol.
The protocol enables automated token-to-token transactions on the Ethereum blockchain. Uniswap was founded on November 2, 2018, by Hayden Adams, a former Siemens mechanical engineer. Uniswap was inspired by Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, who proposed a decentralized exchange (DEX) in 2016 that would use an on-chain automated market maker with specific characteristics.
Smart contracts are used by the automated market maker to set token pricing based on supply and demand. Adams began working on turning this concept into a working product a year later. A year later, he founded Uniswap in 2018 after receiving several grants and a hundred thousand dollars from the Ethereum Foundation. The first version (V1) of the Uniswap protocol was published in November 2018 as a proof-of-concept for Automated Market Makers (AMMs). In Uniswap V1, all liquidity pools were between ETH and a single ERC2O token. Since ETH is the most liquid Ethereum-based asset and does not introduce any new platform risk, it was the best choice for Uniswap V1. The second version (V2) was launched in May 2020, and it included many features and improvements. In Uniswap V2, any ERC20 token can be pooled directly with any other ERC20 token. Wrapped Ether (WETH) is used instead of native ETH in the core contracts, although end users can still use ETH through helper contracts.
In September 2020, it took a further step by creating and awarding its own governance token, UNI, and offering a token giveaway to past users of the protocol. This added both profitability potential and the ability for users to shape its future, and in the following year, it gained considerable popularity thanks to the DeFi phenomenon and associated surge in token trading. The third version (V3) was launched in May 2021, introducing new options to allocate liquidity within a certain price range.
Uniswap exists to create liquidity; it is more than a decentralized exchange; it aims to solve the liquidity issues that platforms such as EtherDelta have experienced. Because professional market makers have little incentive to provide liquidity on very thinly traded assets, there is a liquidity problem. To facilitate exchange, Uniswap provides the tokens in trading pairs in a pool.
A liquidity pool is what it’s called. By depositing assets into the pool and earning fees based on the amount of trading activity, anyone can be a market maker with Uniswap. However, because the price paid increases as the quantity demanded increases, there is a chance of significant slippage for large orders. Smart contracts, on the other hand, help to avoid “slippage,” which occurs when there are insufficient buy or sell orders to match buyers and sellers.
The Uniswap coin (UNI) can be traded on OKEx, Binance, Huobi Global, Coinbase Exchange, Kraken, Bitfinex, Gemini, FTX, Bitstamp, Poloniex, Sushiswap, Okcoin, HitBTC, and KuCoin. UNI is mostly traded against USD, EUR, ETH, BTC, USDT, and USDC. It currently trades at 16.26 USD and has a market capitalization of 10.24 billion USD and a circulating supply of 627,292,763.35 UNI. It has an inflation rate of 43% and an all-time high of 44.97 USD as of May 3rd, 2021.
We may only think of Uniswap as a coin and overlook the fact that it is a cryptocurrency exchange similar to Binance and Coinbase, but it is decentralized. It enables users to trade cryptocurrency without the need for an intermediary anywhere in the world. You can buy and sell cryptocurrencies on Uniswap without ever leaving the platform. Instead, you can keep it in your Ethereum-connected digital or physical wallet. The platform enables anyone to trade ERC-20 tokens more easily. Uniswap is the largest decentralized exchange (DEX) operating on the Ethereum blockchain. That’s the final word.
